A lot of the time, our thinking is based on the people we have around us. That includes emotional states which are converted into thoughts.
I will show you two ways you can control your thinking so that you can be more positive.
1. Ask the right questions. Most of our thinking is pretty much based on questions and answers. We ask questions and then we answer them in the form of thought.
You ask yourself, ‘How am I feeling right now?’ and then the answer comes back that you're not feeling good.
When things occur, we ask ourselves certain questions. Certain questions produce certain answers and also prevents you from getting other answers.
You would ask yourself, ‘Why me?’ but you could get better answers by asking, ‘What can I do to learn from this?’
In order to think more clearly, change the kind of questions that you're asking. Instead of asking, 'Why can't I quit smoking?' you can ask, 'How can I quit smoking easily?’ Ask yourself that question many times.
It's not just the questions you ask, but they questions you failed to ask. If you can't go to sleep early, ask yourself, 'How can I make going to sleep early more enjoyable?’
Your brain will then tell you how you can make it happen.
Questions change your focus and your feelings towards things. When you say 'I'm happy’ that won't create change. Rather, ask ‘What am I happy about?’ This question causes you to come up with references to be happy about.
Find out the questions of people who quit a behavior. What questions do they ask themselves during times of temptation.
Consistently ask yourself questions that challenge your belief system and assume positive traits. It will change your thinking over time.
2. Be present in the moment. The problem with people is they think a lot. Because of that, they produce a lot of low quality thoughts.
A simple thing to do is to not think when you don't have to think. When you're just chilling, you're thinking most of the time. When the time comes to think of something important, you thought so much that you can't think clearly.
Change your focus from your thoughts and into your physical sensations. Rather than thinking, feel the sensation of your hand.
Your hand cannot think. When you do need to think, your thoughts will have more quality.
A way to think better is to think less. When it's time to think, your faculties will be more on point. Only think when it's time to think.
Practice mindfulness and it will improve your thinking significantly.
