How do you deal with pain and suffering that life naturally gives you? It's inevitable that we experience it. It breaks my heart how much suffering there is in this world. At every turn, you see suffering.
The funny thing about humans is that we think we are the only one experiencing whatever we are experiencing. We think we're the only one who feels doubt and sadness. There are a lot of qualities in humans that’s very normal and ubiquitous.
Everyone's trying to give you an appearance of happiness. If you look at the outside, at what people are showing you, you’ll think that you're not meeting people's expectations of happiness. You see them happy with the things that they have like their money and their yacht.
You assume that they’re happy because they’re in that yacht smiling. On the other hand, you're sad and depressed with no money. It's easy to assume that that's the cause of your unhappiness and pain.
When you really ask and talk to those people who are rich, if they're really being honest with you, they're going to tell you that their life is anticlimactic.
I get depressed sometimes. It's crazy that I go through my own battles, but I don't mind. It could be worse. I could get addicted to heroin or lose a family member. I feel lucky, but it's not like I've never dealt with pain. It's not like I've never been broke or never got dumped.
I'm so lucky to be where I am in my position. I think of people who were in my position before. They don't have a lot of money. They don't have a job. They live with their parents or stuff like that. I feel bad, but I remember.
I was desperate, but I knew what I was going to do. It was going to happen. In that process, I experienced a lot of pain and suffering.
The last thing you want to do when you’re experiencing pain is to try to suppress it. You can't just run away from your pain and expect joy to come out of it. If you observe in your experience, as you are suppressing your pain, you'll notice that the pain is still there.
Whenever you feel that pain and that sadness inside of you, you believe that it's caused by the outside world. That pain that you feel inside of you feels empty.
When people say you should face yourself, they're not referring to the mirror. They’re referring to your pain.
You have to face it. Pain is a catalyst for action. It forces you to wake up. It's something that arises in you so that you can pay attention.
