I was just walking and looking at some kids. I remembered when I was their age. I also saw some 20 year olds and thought about when I was 20.
When you think of your 20s or your teens, you sort of think that there was a different feeling to it. It feels like they were better. You feel like they were the glory days.
When you see teenagers having fun, you're like ‘I remember.’ It feels better. You feel like you want to go back to those times.
You want to have your sense of wonder for the world. You want to feel what it is to be young again. You think it was so awesome and amazing. Then, when you really think about it and you go back to those times, you didn't know you were 20. You didn't know you were experiencing your youth.
It was just that you were alive.
You only see it as you see it now because you are looking at it retrospectively. You wish you had it now. The more unhappiness you have at the present moment, the more you prefer another time.
You exaggerate the past and make it look better than it really was. In reality, maybe in those times you were depressed. People were depressed when they were a child, but they want to be children again.
When you were a teenager, you wanted to be an adult. Now that you're an adult, you want to be a teenager. When you retrospectively think about the past, you only think about the good things and not the bad things. When you think about the bad things it will force you to realize that you’ve always thought that way. This is your natural state of mind. This is what you choose to focus on.
The more at peace you are, the more you begin to appreciate what's in front of you. If you do not appreciate what's in front of you, that means that you are looking somewhere else.
Your mind creates a timeline in order to create a place to go. There is no such thing as time, it's only created by the mind. If you only stay in the moment, you'll notice that there's no escape. To escape the moment you have to create a totally new reality.
You have to stay in the moment. The only way to do this is to appreciate the moment. Sometimes, the moment sucks, but have some compassion for it. Even if the moment doesn't give you that much, you take it because it's all that you have.
The way to accept what's unacceptable is to have compassion for it.
