In the world that we’re living in, we try to hide the fact of death out of fear. Society has made it in a way that you don't see death anywhere.
When you don't contemplate death, you tend to not value your time more. You tend to not appreciate things because you don't understand your finite nature. When you think of things, you think that they will always be there because you're not really confronting death.
You're always trying to avoid it mentally. It's an uncomfortable feeling. This feeling is what gives you the driving motivation to actually do things. You get to see in its raw form the finite nature of existence.
The things you have, your youth, and your vitality will one day go away. When you have this understanding, you can make a decision that's proper. A lot of people let death come to them. They don't come to death.
When you let death come to you, that's when it's too late already. You've been kicking the can down the road and when it's time for you to confront it on its own will, there is no more time for you to actually do anything about it.
When you confront that and you go towards it, what tends to happen is you experience your fears but now you have a choice. Now you experience the true nature of reality. Then you say ‘Oh shit, I'm going to die one day.’ That tends to invigorate you.
It puts you in a situation where you notice that your resources are not always going to be there.
When you understand that, you can use your resources better. We all have this illusion that life will always be like this - that you'll always have your parents and your health. You walk through life, not appreciating it. You don't appreciate the people around you because you're thinking that they will always be there.
When you have a clear emotional understanding of how this works and how time is so ephemeral, you suddenly want to take action.
A lot of people are bored and have no motivation because they don't understand how much time they're wasting. They think they have an infinite amount of time.
When you know that you're on the clock, that there is a deadline, your body suddenly gives you more energy. Your body gives you more motivation. It's not because that motivation wasn't there, it’s that your body got kicked into gear.
When you see an old person, don't just ignore them. Realize that that's going to be you one day. Then, you’ll appreciate your life. You will appreciate what you currently have.
When you see somebody die, always contemplate yourself dying.
