The reason why people fail to learn how to learn is they don't understand that intelligence is not measured by how much you know something. It's measured by how easy you can learn.
Somebody isn't smart because they know something. They are smart because they can get a concept and learn it from scratch. I'm not talking about casual learning by reading a book and remembering what it said. That's not learning. That's just reciting.
Learning is a skill set just like marketing and basketball. People suck at things because they don't know how to learn. They think that experiencing pain when you first suck at something means that's where they're going to be forever.
I sucked at playing basketball for many years. The reason I sucked is because I didn't know how to learn. I thought that you're going to get good with randomly practicing.
It got to the point where people were telling me 'Dude, why do you always suck?’ I was like, ‘That’s a good question.’ They were trying to talk shit.
I thought about the things that good basketball players did. I realized that they put themselves in situations where they are uncomfortable.
I thought about who the best shooter is and what he does differently from most people. I searched for the best example and found out what he does differently.
I practiced that fundamental. The problem is many people don't realize that the flashiness and the finesse comes from simplicity.
Complex objects come from simple things.
A lot of the skills you see are an accumulation of simple fundamentals. People think that they could just build the building without building it one brick at a time.
I noticed that the best shooters shot the ball systematically. They first practice shooting the ball in one hand. They will start shooting under the rim. After 5 makes, they'll take one step back and shoot from there. It's a progression. First on one hand, then including the guide hand.
After practicing like this, I got really good. I began shooting like crazy!
I wasn't getting good because I wasn't deliberately practicing. That means practicing with a focus on the one thing that you suck at.
For marketing, I found out who the best marketer is. I asked what it was that the best marketers do that other marketers don’t.
They did the most research. They knew their audience more. That one aspect separated all the other marketers. I thought, rather than focusing on everything, learn about your audience. Learn how to do your research and everything will fall into place.
The reason why most people don't do research is because It's the part that looks like they're not making any progress.
Find the fundamental and master it.
